Collection consists of ca. 300 photographs of old and new San Francisco Chinatown and the Mother Lode country, as well as photostats, captions, and signed mounts. Includes the original work of photographer Louis J. Stellman and copy prints from the Arnold Genthe Collection at the California Historical Society, San Francisco. Also includes illustrative photographs used in Richard H. Dillon's Hatchet men (1962).

Louis J. Stellman was born on January 6, 1877 in Baltimore, Maryland. After briefly trying pharmacy, then telegraphy, he settled down at the turn of the century as a Los Angeles newspaperman. In 1902 he moved to San Francisco and worked as a reporter, then an editor, for the NEWS. He later became an editorial and feature writer for the BULLETIN.
